We Need Your Help To Investigate H-1B Visas In The Bay Area

We are only four days away from the end of our crowdfunding campaign to investigate skilled-immigrant visas in the Bay Area

But we need your help to reach our goal.

We are the world’s first newspaper to partner with Beacon, an Oakland journalism startup. Our collaboration will raise $15,000 for an international, multimedia reporting effort on H1-B visas. Many companies want looser quotas on these visas so they can hire more overseas engineers and other workers. Their critics say it’s a ploy to acquire cheap, indentured workers.

The Chronicle is dedicated to telling the truth about what is happening in Northern California. To do that, we sometimes must look outside our borders. This innovative approach will allow us to hire freelancers with expertise in international reporting while keeping Chronicle journalists on local stories and investigations.

Chronicle editors and designers will prepare the stories for publication — the money raised will be expended on news=gathering. Major funders will be disclosed after the reporting and editing is completed to ensure journalistic integrity.

More than a century ago, the first editor of this company proclaimed that the San Francisco region deserved media that was “alarmingly enterprising, startlingly original, honest and fearless.” That’s never been more true, and we hope you agree this is an enterprising way to tell an original story about something that matters deeply to our community.
