Veterans Day Message From The AFL-CIO Union Veterans Council
Veterans Day was originally known as "Armistice Day." It was created in 1919 to commemorate the end of World War I. In 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed into law a bill that specified that the day of November 11 would thereafter come to be known as "Veterans Day." Ever since, November 11 has become a solemn occasion for all of America to pause and reflect upon the great sacrifices made by the men and women who have served in America's Armed Forces. The proclamation that accompanied the law that was signed by President Eisenhower included the president's decree that Americans "would solemnly remember the sacrifices of all those who fought so valiantly, on the seas, in the air, and on foreign shores to preserve our heritage of freedom." It also called upon all American citizens to "re-consecrate ourselves to the task of promoting an enduring peace so that their efforts shall not have been in vain."
