With Economy Chilling The Trades, Union Apprenticeship Programs On Ice In Chicagoland Area!
Nearly all apprenticeship programs across the 24 crafts affiliated with the Chicago and Cook County Building and Construction Trades Council are closed to newcomers, and it's likely to remain that way for about another year, according to Tom Villanova, president of the council.The schools are still serving second- through fifth-year students, Villanova said, but they've cut off entry into first-year apprenticeships since most of the locals are facing around a 30 percent unemployment rate.
